Management Practices

Cielo’s values reflect its priority to stakeholders.

  • We integrate the portfolio of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index of the New York Stock Exchange (DJSI), which recognizes companies with the best sustainability practices around the world.
  • We conform to B3 Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) since 2014 – which follows good management and corporate governance practices. The company has been listed on the Novo Mercado index of B3 since 2009.
  • We are signatories to the UN’s Global Pact. Every year we reaffirm our adherence to the Pact and present progress, along with actions undertaken within human rights, labor, environmental and anti-corruption practices.
  • Since 2013, we published our sustainability report with the company’s GRI indicators – which were audited by a third party.
  • We promote diversity, since our guidelines provide for actions such as the inclusion of same-sex partners in medical and dental plans, as well as the adoption of valuing diversity as selection criteria of youngsters for the Learning Program.
  •  We have a Sustainability Committee, which reports to the Board of Directors, contributing to the continuous improvement of Cielo’s sustainability profile.


Cielo invests in social projects by means of incentive laws, such as the Rouanet Law, the Sports Incentive Law, FIA (Fund for Children and Adolescents), PRONON (National Program of Support for Cancer Care), Elder Law and PRONAS/PCD (National Program of Support for Disabled People Health Care). The investment in social projects is focused on the following:

  •   Education: Promote initiatives that improve basic and/or vocational education.
  • Entrepreneurship/Income Generation: Support and bolster initiatives enabling the income generation, thus, contributing to the entrepreneurs’ business development.

The Environment

A sustainable company is made up of conscious employees

  • The activities of Cielo do not cause significant impacts on the environment. However, from the Environmental Impacts Assessment Matrix, we identified the environmental aspects of our operations and processes that must be managed;
  • We established a monitoring system and measures to reduce our environmental impacts:
  • Cielo properly disposes of obsolete equipment, in accordance with the regulations of relevant environmental bodies;
  • The company maintains programs of separating recyclable waste and responsible disposal of waste from administrative activities;
  • Reuse of collected rainwater and monitoring of water consumption;
  • Rational use of electricity;
  • Focusing on employees, promotes campaigns targeted to conscious consumption and value attitudes, involving the quality of relationships and conservations of resources, as well as the management of impacts as principles for professional performance;
  • Established reduction targets for water and energy consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases.


GOALS 2019
Water: Maintain water consumption in line with 2018 levels
Waste: Send for recycling more than 90% of all waste generated by Cielo (POS terminals, marketing material, organic waste in the headquarters, cables and supplies)
Scope 1 emissions: Reduce Scope 1 emissions by 1% from 2018 levels as long as no new sales staff are hired
Scope 2 emissions/electricity consumption: Reduce electricity consumption at Cielo’s headquarters, stores (except those located in shopping malls) and branches (except those that move) by 1% compared to 2018
Scope 3 emissions: Field service: In view of Cielo’s projected mileage increase due to the expected market share recovery, mechanisms have been created to mitigate this impact – customer self-service in stores, branches, partner banks and sales executives who install client terminals – aiming to reduce by 3% estimated emissions for the year

* The targets have as base year 2018.

Climate Change Strategy

We seek to reduce our contribution to climate change through a business strategy based on four pillars:

  • Assessment of impacts: analysis of the risks to the business as a result of climate change and preparation of the Greenhouse Gas Inventory according to the methodology of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, to identify the main sources of emissions and map the opportunities for improvement in reducing emissions;
  • Reducing emissions: implementation of improvements and processes to reduce emissions, such as reduced international travel and providing a charter bus service for employees, in addition to setting public targets for reducing emissions;
  • Compensation of greenhouse gases not avoided: scopes 1 and 2, through carbon credit purchasing projects that promote income generation and social and biodiversity benefits;
  • Coordination and commitment to transparency: participation in public policy discussions that contribute to a low carbon economy and dissemination of information about our initiatives in relation to climate change through the Carbon Disclosure Project, Carbon Efficient Index of the B3 and Public Emissions Register of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program;
